I called for service of my garage door opener and made an appointment for the following day. I was told there would be a free estimate. The overhead bar had become detached from the wall. The garage door could still open using the wall control, but because of the detached bar, it would bang around and keep going up and down, so I disconnected the arm that attaches to the door to prevent damage. The guy arrives, looks at the problem, and tells me (broken English, so hard to fully understand) that he has to check the LiftMaster unit itself to make sure the "load sensors" were not damaged by the bar becoming detached. In reviewing the video of this, I think now that he was asking me if he can open the unit itself, but at the time, I thought he was asking me if the door opens. In any event, he proceeded to take the motherboard apart. I watched him disconnect wires and reconnect them. He then went over to the sensors by the garage door and appeared to wipe them off. Then he went back to the unit, and when he pressed the opener from the unit, there was no movement. Then he went over to the wall control, pressed the button, and again, there was no movement. I repeated that the garage opener was working (but for the detached top bar) right up until the moment he arrived. He then asked me how old the unit is. Finally, he told me that the unit would have to be replaced. I said no, I just need the bar reattached; I told him that I saw what he just did - and I was befuddled as to why he did what he did. He said, okay, fine, and quoted a price of $175 to reattach the bar. I told him to leave. I called the company number and reported what happened and that I have it all on video. The man told me he'd speak to the technician and call me back. He did not call back. The next day, I called again and spoke to the same man, who I learned resides out of state. He said the technician denied doing anything improper and commented that I was watching him the entire time. I asked him what he was going to do about this, and I offered to show him my video. He said maybe he can come by and watch the video later in the week, but at this point he does not intend to take any action. I told him to come watch the video today, and he said he is out of state and what do you expect me to do, take a plane to come see you? He then began raising his voice at me, and I hung up the phone.
