I was contacted through Facebook by a friend I met in person. Her reason for contacting me was to tell me about a government grant of $70,000 she recently received on cash. So being that I knew this person I trusted the legitimacy of the situation. When i tried to call her on the phone she told me her phone was broken and being repaired, this should have been an immediate red flag. So she sent me a link in Facebook messenger which brought up chat window with an "agent" who proceeded to ask me for my name and address, on order to find my eligibility for a government grant. After a few moments she told me congratulations that I'm eligible for the grants but wouldn't tell me for how much. She then asked me to send her a picture of my ID which I was reluctant about. I asked her questions like: what organization she was with, how does the program work, etc. which she gave me run around answers for never addressing the questions directly. Still against my better instinct I sent her a picture of my ID anyway. She then began telling me about the fees associated with the grant: $1500 for $70,000, $5000 for $100,000 etc. etc., Meanwhile my "friend" Ann was messaging me trying to coax me into going along with every whim of the "agent". This is where I stopped the buck and began researching online about such grants and came across articles describing scams of this sort. I stopped talking to the individuals on messenger despite receiving many more messages and reported them on Facebook. There is no scammer option for reporting people via Facebook messenger so I had to file it under other.
