I was contacted via text message from someone named, Danold Sawyer asking if I had received my first task. I ignored it the message and then received another asking me to complete my first task. I then recalled that I filled out an application for a secret shopper type thing online. So I reply that I haven’t received anything. He then tells me to check my mailbox. Neeedless to say, I received an envelope with 3 checks in it that equal $2,995. There is a form inside with instictions on what to do with the checks which are: despite them, wait for them to clear, go to the Apple store and purchase two gift cards in the mount of $1,300 and $1,350. The remainder of the money is my payment (about $345). Then wait for my next task which will use the gift cards. There was a questionnaire on the back to fill out about the store and salesperson. I then reply back to this person letting him know that received the task. I think it’s a scam so I looked online for the company. I found one that looks legit (fieldagent.net) so I thought it was fine. So I deposited the checks (they looked real). After not receiving a text back from this Donald Sawyer guy, I began to agree with my gut feeling. I called my bank and told them. I had to speak with the fraud dept. Since everything was still pending from the weekend transactions, I had to wait until Tuesday. They did confirm that they are fake checks and now my account is restricted and nothing can go in or out until the checks are returned. And the guy just texted me this morning replying to my text from Sat. I would like to catch this guy.

I was informed by direct message with a link of a secret shopping job with field agent from a friend on linked in. I went to the link and filled out the information and a couple days later received an email from

“Donald Sawyer” asking me questions about stores around me, he then informs me that my first assignment should be in the mail... the first assignment was a cashiers check of $2,950.00 and a questionnaire ... I was told to go to deposit the check, wait for funds to clear then purchase a $2,000 gift card and a $650 gift card and $300 would be my pay... I did as directed and then I was told to send photos of the gift cards... the check had cleared in my account so I was not at all concerned but the next day the cashiers check that had cleared was returned saying the chk was altered and fake... they tricked me out of $2,650...

Applied work from home send me info said I was accepted send me a 2900 cashier check to buy 2600 on apple gift cards and to keep 300 for my service

This scam appears to be a spoof of a real company, FieldAgent. A letter was sent to to the consumer, along with a check for $2980. The consumer was asked to deposit the check, keep $300, and purchase a $2000 gift card and a $600 gift card from an Apple store. The letter reads:

Attn: Prospective Mystery Shopper,

Field Agent Inc is a leading Brand Audit and quality check provider. We supply brand audits and retail audits for prestige businesses and premium brands. The merits of this exercise are int eh survey itself and provide you the opportunity to valuable and sensitive informaiton that helps with business development and first-hand consumer experience. This envelope contains a check of $2980.00. You are require to deposit the check at your bank, wait for funds to be available before you begin your task.

ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTION

You will be evaluating a local APPLE STORE in your city. Our check covers all expenses. Evaluation, shopping taxes, and your compensation of $300 for completing this survey assignment. Purchase the below items from an Apple store in your city.

Whilst conducting an assignment always remember that you are incognito so you cannot use notepads or Dictaphones in, or within sight of the location, and do not draw attention to yourself.

Please send a text to (214-301-0248) immediately you make the purchase so we can give you further instructions on how to complete your task with the purchased gift cards.
