Fake Construction Equipment Website Reports & Reviews (1)

- Salt Lake City, UT, USA • Jan 18, 2024

We were looking to purchase a skid steer for our business use and had been looking online nationwide. We found the skid steer through Facebook Marketplace and then went to the website provided. The scammer copied a legimate business's logo, location, products, everything to create a new website with their own phone number on it. The phone number had the same area code as the legitimate business, presumably so as not to arouse suspicion. There were positive online reviews (for the real business), company registration information with the state, even a form filed with the transportation department for license to haul equipment -- all the research results were real! We even had a friend who buys equipment for his business have his resources do checking. lt all looked legit. The equipment was owned by a bank, so the payment was a wire transfer from our bank to another national bank (Bank of America), who then provided a title. We have a sale agreement as well. This was the first of December. The seller communicated with us via phone calls, text messages, and emails all through the process. He didn't have any accent; no idea where he really was from. He was supposed to be coordinating delivery at the end of December. He even texted later to say it looked like delivery would be right after Christmas. Of course that's when he went silent. And now his website is shut down (both the legit and fake websites are blocked now). We found a different number on that transportation form (it was a really close number, so we hadn't noticed it was a different number); when we called it, we got the REAL owner of the company. He's beside himself. He had already been made aware of what has happened to him and has been dealing with the mess ever since. Now our bank is reviewing what happened and what, if anything, can be done. Only after all this went down did we find out that equipment scams have dramatically increased since the pandemic. We won't be buying any equipment in the near future, and we won't be shopping on Facebook Marketplace either, where a lot of these scams are being advertised.
