Type of a scam Online Purchase
i hesitate to say what it was because i don’t want to harm legitimate business, but this alert isn’t about the product - i received the veggie chopper i ordered.
this alert is about additional monthly ‘membership’ charges i didn’t knowingly sign up for and didn’t discover until, i am embarrassed to admit, today, eight months later. ??
it was easy to miss because
a) i received the product i ordered;
b) i am used to ignoring emails that look like spam or phishing scams and didn’t react immediately to ‘exclusivity store’ emails informing me i would be charged;
c) product purchase and shipping confirmation emails were sent from an unrelated email (pro natural shop) so i didn’t make the connection;
d) i have several monthly subscription-type charges from apps, online storage, netflix, etc. and it took me awhile to figure out that the monthly charges for $8.95 and $0.27 international handling fee by ‘topmember’ were not legitimate;
e) $8.95 didn’t set alarm bells off the way a bigger charge would have.
i vaguely remember clicking ‘upgrade’ when i purchased the veggie chopper, a deal nothing related to a membership. i even received scammy-looking email notifications now and then that i would be charged, which as i said, i ignored. in the end, the ‘company’ made about $65 before i figured out what was going on. ??
when i finally made the connection between the dates mentioned in the emails and the charges, i tried opening the support link, which led to red flags and warnings because of an expired site certificate. the listed support email also bounced back as invalid. but the phone was answered promptly, and asking only my name and zip code, my ‘membership’ was cancelled and confirmation emails appeared in my inbox scarcely before i had finished making the request. i have to say, ‘***l’ was more efficient than many legit companies at cancellation.
in short, don’t be afraid to buy from fb advertisers, but check your charges and be wary of ‘upgrades’ during checkout. the scam has by now moved on to a different company name and product, protected by interested clicks and prospering from consumer inattention.
