- Kansas City, MO, USA

On November 21, 2020, I received a USPS Priority Mail Flat Rate Envelope addressed to me from someone in Florida. Upon opening the envelope (which I wasn't really sure about opening) from a person I did not know, I discovered a "Cashier's Check" in the amount of $1,897.50, drawn on a bank named "fnbo," 1620 Dodge Street, Omaha, NE 68197.The "Remitter" was a different name than the person on the return address information but read "Pay to the Order of: me. The signatures on the check, naturally, are barely legible but the second "signature" was a series of numbers.

The "Assignment Memo" alerted me to "pay attention to the words in bold." I was directed to go to my bank to have the check cashed (within 72 hours upon receipt of the check). Then I was supposed to withdraw the cash and deduct 'my' commission which is $307.50. Then I was told that $1,590 would be used to complete the secret shopping assignments. The following instructions read the same but for three (3) different stores; purchase eBay Gift Cards of $500 in total and it should be $100 or $200 denominations and the second instruction was to "Make any Phillips product purchase of my choice by spending not more than $30 in total. That was for my personal use. I was instructed that if eBay Gift Cards were not available, to purchase Sephora gift cards or Google Play gift cards which should be $200 or $100 denominations. I was then instructed to contact the email address provided and once the task was completed, send the survey report via email using the questionnaire below and to "type the email correctly." The report for each store should be sent separately: Ambiance of shop/outlet; the address of store evaluated; the name of the store clerk; how long it took to complete the service; description and quality of the Phillips product purchased after testing it; customer service professionalism, information that you think would be helpful & any additional comments; pictures of the gift cards are required via email. Gently scratch off the label on the back of the gift cards to reveal the hidden digit code, take a readable picture one by one showing the code and the serial number; pictures of the receipt of all the purchases made. A note followed stating, "At the store, under no circumstances should you acknowledge that you are evaluating their services as that will defeat the purpose of the program, some of the security questions which can trip you include the following: If or when asked if you are a mystery shopper answer NO. As soon as the survey is completed, kindly have all the details above emailed to me and send a test message to ***-***-**** that you have completed the surveys. We will request the physical gift cards after your reports have been reviewed. It is best you communicate with me via email or text message due to my heavy workload." There was no signature but a name, title, and the email address.
