I received a voicemail message and tried three times to return the call. Each time the answering system said I had reached the Escambia County Sheriff's Office and no officers were available to take my call. I was directed to leave my name and number. I got through the 4th time. The person who answered connected me to the "Citation Division." The man on the phone identified himself as Sgt. Mike McCallister. He said I failed to appear for a jury summons and had to drive immediately to the Sheriff's office (he would send a car escort if needed). I did not get any summons in the mail, but he suggested maybe it was thrown out as junk mail. This explanation was plausible. He also provided my correct name (although he also referenced a previous married name I have not used in 15 years) and correct address, but gave an incorrect birth date. He had the correct year, but incorrect month and day. Unfortunately I gave him my correct birth date. Then he gave me two stern options. The first option would take 8 hours and would require me to be fingerprinted and photographed (which would be put into a state law enforcement database) before I could be released from the citation. The second option was to go buy two "EFF Voucher CD Packs" and show up with the receipt at the Sheriff's Department to show proof I had paid two fines issued to me by a specific judge (I don't recall the name of the judge). One was for "failure to appear" for $498.72 and the second was for "contempt of court" for $485.77. He gave these two long numbers to use when getting the vouchers: FTACR-1701-42-0315AC and COC-CR-438-01-1344DB. When I asked where I would buy these vouchers he gave me a list of stores such as Target and Dollar Tree. At this point I asked him for his badge number. I called the Escambia County Sheriff's office and they said they have no such employee and the badge number he provided me (8004D) was fake. Additional note: he told me the conversation was being recorded and once he put me on hold to "check with Financial Director Nancy Clark about the exact amount I needed to go get." This call was very upsetting and caused me a lot of stress.
