ESC Technology Reports & Reviews (1)

- Independence, KY, USA

I was contacted by the "HR" department of the company, ESC Technology in regard to a resume that I had posted on CareerBuilder. The opening was for a project manager and their claim was that their company dealt in the leasing of heavy machinery for international projects. This is similar to the work that I do now so I was initially not suspicious. The first email from HR came from an official email address matching the company name and had relevant contact information. The company's website was functional and professional but not particularly sharp. The HR email requested a time to set up a phone call, which I provided. The phone call interview was short but contained relevant questions and seemed reasonably professional. This was followed by contact from a person claiming to be the Regional Special Projects Manager, Christopher Tuley, working out of Boston, MA. From there I was offered an employment contract that stipulated that after a one-month probationary period of training I would be offered a full-time, remote position. I read the contract and submitted my signature but no other personal information to begin what I thought was the training period. The training period would consist of 10 learning modules spread out over the one-month period with gradual increase in intensity. The first week went normally with me submitting five different sets of answers related to the five learning modules that I was assigned. Each day, after turning in the previously assigned module, Christopher would then assign me the next session while also engaging in idle, profession, chatting. The modules would consist of four-to-five pages of information related to different topics that were stated to be relevant to the proposed position. In this case, mostly related to international trade and basic supply chain management. There would be a set of ten questions to be answered after the case was reviewed. The material was generally well-written and professional with some phonetic issues that would typically denote that the content had been translated from another language but seldom were any of the problems outside what would usually seem strange. During the second week of training during one of the chats after I had turned in the previous day's module Christopher broached the subject of a special project that I could undertake for the company while still during training. He stated that they were relocating a team of senior company members to a nearby city and needed assistance purchasing and installing office equipment, computers, and other accessories. Due to the company being located outside of the country and not having set up US-based purchasing cards yet, in order to assist with the project I would need to use my credit card and they would wire me the needed funds. I was immediately skeptical of this proposed project and I stated that I would not be able to participate under the guidelines stipulated where I was required to use my own credit card. Christopher said he understood and would get back to me with any alternate means. When I next tried to contact Christopher to submit my completed module for the day I did not receive any response or confirmation of reception of my email. That was on a Thursday and when I tried to contact him on the next day I also received no response. I gave it the weekend to see if perhaps he was waiting to contact me until the next module was to be assigned but when I tried to contact him on Monday his email address no longer existed. I tried to contact the HR person, Sonya Ford, who I had initially been contacted by, but that email was no longer active either. The phone numbers provided by both of them no longer worked and the company website was gone. After some investigating I discovered that this most closely matched the description of a Office Set-Up scheme where a party looks to gain access to your bank account or credit card through the guise of it being a special project for you, the new employee. I am sure that this ESC Technology handle will not be used in the future but hopefully my experience can be of some usefulness.
