I was looking for a vacation rental home for availability between 10/10/2020-10/12/2020. One vacation rental home post on craigslist.org caught my eye. I replied to the post checking a for availability for the dates I was looking for. I got a response that the property is available for rent. The scammer gave me cost details $1000 for rent, $200 for cleaning fee and $1000 deposit which will be returned on checkout date if there is no damage. I wanted to talk to the person so asked for a phone number and email. Surprisingly email and phone number were shared with me almost immediately. The phone number he shared was 585-598-0209 and email was [email protected]. I called the person and he picked up and we talked about the rental home and rental process. Since I talked to the person, I started believing him. He shared a contract form with bank account details where I was supposed to transfer $2200. I signed the form and returned it through email. I also initiated the money transfer on 9/28/2020. After a few days, he confirmed that he received the money and confirmed the rental through email. I arrived there for checkin on 10/10 and found that the property is occupied by a family and they have booked it. They contacted the owner and to my surprise I found that the actual owner is not aware of any booking. In the meantime, I checked my email and found that the scammer sent me an apology email saying the property is damaged by the previous renter and it is not in a condition for rent.
