I replied to a job posting on Upwork, a platform for freelancers. The posting said they were looking for a part-time proofreader, and when I applied, they immediately accepted. They made me communicate with them exclusively through skype, which was all around very sketchy, but I proceeded because I was hoping it was real. They told me that I needed to buy materials for the job (a laptop and printer), and they would send me a check with which to do so, urging me to cash it ASAP. I cashed it but immediately realized that was a bad move when their "vendor" wouldn't give me an invoice for the products I was getting, and insisted I make the payment through a cashier's check. I told the woman I was communicating with that I wanted to back out, and she told me I could "return the money" by sending them a cashier's check (to a random address in Maryland). I went to the bank to withdraw the check, and thank god they are very alert to scams and did not let me do so. They verified the check was not valid, and If I had withdrawn the check I would have lost nearly 5k.
