I applied for a remote proofreading/SEO job on UpWork and took a questionnaire through al link, answering some generic questions. After some time had passed, I got a message on UpWork saying I had been selected and to click a Skype link for an interview. I talked briefly with a female agent but the majority of my interaction was with my so-called supervisor, Alexander Toro. He sent me an email containing the acceptance letter for the job, offering $25/hr and I signed and dated it then sent it back to him for documentation. He also sent me an email containing a check for $2000 that he wanted me to print and deposit into my bank, which he had asked me the name of. He also needed a picture of the funds in my account for proof and documentation. I would use these company funds to purchase the required materials, a printer, MacBook, and the pre-installed software to do the job. These would be sent to me from the vendor after I send the vendor the money through either a wire transfer or Cash app, he asked me which I preferred. This just seemed off to me. A legit company paying a vendor through a wire transfer or cash app? He never told me the vendor's name or would video call me or show me any credentials when I had asked, always had some excuse saying I have to complete this process first for safety reasons or something along those lines. The company this job was for is a place called The Amish Farm & House. I had looked up this place online and discovered it's a real company and I called their number and talked to a woman about this and she was aware of it and told me it was a scam they have been dealing with for a while, trying to shut them down. I now had confirmation that this job was fake. I had already deposited the check into my bank via mobile deposit thinking surely it was going to decline, but it actually went through and the funds into my account. I am still scared to spend any of it though as I still believe the check may be fraudulent and be voided after 30 days. I called my bank and told them what happened and I was told that they cannot cancel the check once the funds are in my account. Alexander was getting frustrated with me for not sending the money to the vendor yet and started threatening me, saying he will go after my UpWork account and my bank if I do not return the company's money. I do not really know what to do in this situation. My instinct tells me he is trying to scare me into sending the money and then I lose it and another 2000, I am just not touching it to see what happens. I had gotten frustrated and sent him one final message telling him to terminate my employment and that I will return the money, then I deleted Skype. I then received an email from him talking about his disappointment in me and giving me some options on returning the money along with some addresses to send it to through a wire transfer or direct deposit, also threatening me again if i do not return it along with a copy of the slip for documentation, then he will send me my termination form to sign. I did not give him a lot of personal information, but i did give him my home address, bank name and he knows my name. I have screenshots of this entire interaction and the emails for my own documentation. Also, I have the Cash app of the 'vendor' and the account and routing numbers where he wanted me to send the money to. Not sure what to do at this point.
