I was sent an email by someone claiming to be an attorney who said that a company they work with was looking urgently for a remote transcriptionist. I set up a date for an interview, expecting it to be over a video call. When I clicked the link for the Teams interview, the interview ended up being chat only. A day later I was offered the job and offered the higher end salary they were offering, despite not having experience. They told me I needed a company laptop and that they would send me a check to purchase said laptop. At this point, I realized I was being scammed. I did not give them my bank information, but I did write my social security on their new hire paperwork they sent. When I looked up the company, it did seem legitimate, but I did not see any job postings. Apparently, the scam is that they get your bank information and give you a fraudulent check that they know will bounce.

I was contacted about a job and an interview was scheduled through Microsoft Teams. I was sent questions that I had to respond to and then was told I’d be notified the following day. My contact was a guy named Mark Waisglass. I was then offered the position and sent a fake contract, W2, Direct deposit form, and an emergency contact form. All emails were from the company and the PDFs looked totally legit. I just felt like something was off. I asked for the HR number and called it. It was a guy with a strong accent who looked me up and said that everything was legit and safe. I called back with another question and there wasn’t a voicemail (huge red flag) he happened to call me back and I asked the location of the office. He said Canada. I told him the number came up from Minnesota and he hung up.

This company was on LinkedIn I applied as a transcriptionist job for a publication company. They contacted through email with a fake pdf document that was well written about their company. I was instantly impressed because of the document that I agreed to an interview. They said the interview will be via Skype service but they instead used Microsoft teams and told me to open an account. Once I opened the account I was told that this would be a text interview. Red flag!! But I still went with it considering to see how it would pan out. The interview was fast with about 9 questions and I was told that my answers should be completed in 35 minutes. I was notified after answering that they will send over my answers to their “HR department” and will get back with me the next day. The next morning they offered me the position. That was so fast and I had never showed my face or seen anyone else’s. They said they have a main vendor that provides the equipment as this was a remote at home job. Fast forward to them saying that I’ll have to deposit a check with my mobile banking deposit option. They sent me a check that I had to print out. Red flag! I never had any of this happen to me before. I still processed it. I looked up their information the next day to see if it was a scam and seen a few reports about them. My account I provided is frozen because I didn’t want them scamming in to the system somehow.
