I applied for a commercial acting role on Backstage.com where it originally stated pay was $750. for a day shoot in Toronto for Coffee time restaurant. That seemed reasonable so I followed through submitting through Backstage. My profile contains headshots and personal information such as age, height etc. When they contacted me by email ([email protected]), the language of the email was a bit complicated, at times paternalistic rather than professional, and the payout listed was increased from $750 to $6,000 with $500 in advance and $5,500 paid out upon completion of the shoot. I'm fairly new to the field and have only done 2 legitimate paid jobs so this seemed odd that it increased but not an unusual structure in terms of the payout and contract terms. They asked me to forward headshots and a copy of my resume to another branch of their team which raised a flag since normally they would do that internally. Then they asked for basic info including phone number but no significant info like banking or SIN. So that still felt safe. Now they have accepted me for the role and the terms have increased again- $9000 including wardrobe, travel, etc. But they use an online payment method that is called Mobile Deposit Load with definitely seems sketchy. Long story short, I looked up their website and none of the team show up in LinkedIn as working for the company with the exception of the CEO, and the fellow reaching out to me, Sean Molinaro, doesn't seem to exist on LinkedIn- a major red flag. I'm annoyed with myself that I believed it so long but want to prevent others from getting caught. www.lineandcontentfilms.com
