My mom told me she was buying a pick up for 1209 dollars. It was a 2003 ford ranger. It was being shipped from montana. I looked at the pics she was emailed and wow it was really nice. I read the message from the seller that said they lived on an air force base and the truck had 89000 miles that it was in the ebay warehouse and if intersested she would email my mom the info on how to pay. She received an email with an EBAY logo that was an invoice and had an order number on it. It had the vehicle info and instructions for payment were with an Ebay gift card only. It also had a phone number for Ebay customer service. . First thing that stunk was how nice the truck was for the price. Second payment with gift card only. Third the number for ebay customer service is not an ebay phone number( i have been selling on ebay for 3 years). So i called the ebay number they gave no answer it just rang and rang. Then i called the real ebay number and asked them to check the order id number. First of all rget said Ebay does not send email invoices and that the order id did not exist. They asked me if we were asked to pay with a gift card and if the seller said they lived on a military base. Apparently this is a very common scam. Once you send the gift card numbers to them (via email) they cash them within minutes and that money is gone it is untraceable and there is nothing anyone can do. What is so convincing is the Ebay money back guarantee logo being used. I also searched ebays listings for this truck of course there was not one. Thankfully i looked into this before my mom sent that money so she was not actually ripped off. Sadley someone else is in her place. I did let ebay know even though there isnt anything they can do. I alsi filed a complaint with the FTC and am writing this up now with the BBB. This kind of thing has got to be stopped its sickening and peopke are getting away with this all the time. Awareness is our only defense at this point. I hope this helps someone else .
