I have been applying to jobs using LinkedIn and indeed. On November,6,2023 I received an email from an outside source [email protected] who I thought was a recruiting company Dear Prospective Employee,

I then responded that I was interested and asked for more details about the job.

Dear Prospective Employee,

Thanks for taking time to apply for our Data Entry Clerk Job, this position will be a work from home (100% REMOTE).

I never applied for this job, but was taken a back by the weekly salary. After answering all interview questions I received a congratulatory email asking me to provide my full name and address:

Congratulations, Your experience is satisfactory and impressive, and we have offered you the position of a Data Entry Clerk (Remote).

The company's HR department reviewed your answers to the Interview questions and gave their report. The good news is you've just been confirmed qualified for the position. You would be placed on a paid 2-week probation in order for the management to access your work ethics and efficiency. You will be fully paid for the 2 weeks probation.

You will be enrolled for top-of-the-line training that includes online training, and new hire class orientation. We are committed to helping you build a solid foundation and do your job to the best of your abilities.

Testing your efficiency for the week is to be in charge of the purchase and delivery of the company's branded materials and equipment for your orientation and workstation. A payment in the form of a Certified Company Check would be issued to you by the company's financial manager to take care of the expenses. More information on the task would be communicated to you.

What's the name of institution do you bank with, so we can determine the payroll portal to put you on ?

You will be scheduled for a zoom meeting session with the HR department during your one week training session. All means of means communication will be via mail before then. Your paperwork (USCIS Form I-9 and W-4 forms) will be sent to you via FedEx during your probation period. I will be here to inform you before it is sent so you can be on the lookout for it.

I did as such thinking this was the necessary steps to complete my new hire onboarding.

I was then advised to go to the nearest staples or Office Depot to purchase Business check refills. I had never heard of this product but was assured this was the process for me to purchase my own equipment. They advised it would cost around $15 but when arriving to the store it was double that amount. So I sent a picture asking if this was in fact the correct product. They assured me it was and that I would be fully refunded. Once I purchased the check refills I sent a copy of my receipt as requested. Afterwards I was sent another email with a PDF attachment. With the steps to print this information off on a check using the “check refills I bought. Once deposited I was to send them a screen shot of the deposit confirmation. I felt very uneasy and decided to google what kind of companies use these check refills and that’s when I stumbled upon a familiar scam reported to the BBB.
