I tried to hire an artist for an artwork commission through Twitter. Scammer, impersonating the artist with whom I was in contact, asked for upfront payment through PayPal using the same profile avatar, name, and nearly identical username handle as the legitimate artist, and so I wasn't able to identify the scammer in time. I ended up paying them through PayPal for the amount, which is now being disputed as illegitimate due to the nature of the transaction. The artist, of course, had no idea such a scam had occurred unbeknownst to them during the tiny window of time that communication was paused between us, and understandably wasn't willing to provide the artwork service as they weren't the one who received any money.
