When customers call the 989-204-8810 number and auto-attendant asks them to "press 1 if you are a consumers energy cusomer," "press 2 if your are a DTE customer," or "press 3 if you are a propane customer." Customers then are prompted to leave a message for the scammer, who frequently identifies herself as Brenda, to call back.
In addition to trying to scam utility companies, the scammers go after customers of retail propane companies. It is believed that they are able to identify specific retailers to specific addresses (and hence telephone numbers) by looking at the retailer logos on tanks leased by the customers.
