I had a lady email me about a week or so ago, inquiring about electrical work. She said she would courier a cheque for the approved quote and we can schedule a date.

At this point I hadn't had a phone conversation with her, and felt reluctant, but agreed.

When she sent the cheque, she mentioned her secretary accidentally sent our quote plus the painter's quote. She requested that once we received the cheque we pay the painters. At this point, my gut was still not feeling good about it, therefore I had said, if the cheque clears I don't mind, however I will not be doing any financial transactions with her funds until the cheque clears.

When we got the cheque I had the owner go in to the bank directly and deposit it and inquire about it - as it was a certified cheque the teller would be able to tell us if there was funds in the account to clear it. The teller assured us the funds were in her bank which was relieving to hear but I still refused to do any transactions with her funds until it cleared.

This morning I saw - to my initial gut intuition - the cheque was counterfiet and was returned. The scammer used someone's actual account number on faked cheque.

If anyone has a similar experience please do not move any money until cheque clears! Luckily this person did not get away with it with me, but it could easily happen to anyone!
