I had applied on Indeed (11/14/2018) for an admin assistant position and received an email from William Grovatt (11/18/2018) letting me know that he had filled the position but was impressed by my resume and said he forwarded it to a good friend - David Colton - as he was also looking to fill a similar position. I contacted Mr. Colton on (11/18/2018) and he replied about a week later and told me he was opening a new brokerage office in San Antonio, TX, and needed someone on the ground as he was in Chicago. He asked me to answer some questions and then offered me the position under a 1099 contract until Jan 2019 at $30/hr and $300/mo transportation. He said this position would likely turn permanent at the end of January. I was very skeptical from the beginning but could not pin the scam down so accepted the position. I was asked to create an office expense report for the new office set-up with a $25,000 budget and send to him. I was also told to send my time sheet to Patrick in his account department at [email protected].

Over the next week I worked on the report, sending Mr. Colton several emails asking for clarification on a few items and about the office location and was answered very vaguely or not at all - which also gave me more doubt. He then sent me an email telling me that his lawyer was working on the business license and registration for San Antonio..... then came the email (12/17/2018) that said he would be sending me a check for $2419.47 - I was to keep $300. for transportation and to deposit the rest immediately and let him know when the check cleared and then he would let me know what to do with the funds - now I was very skeptical. I received the check two days later and called the bank that was named on the check (BECU) and they informed me that the check # did not match my name nor the amount that I had given them and that it was not a valid check. Of course I will not be depositing this check into my bank account. I have not contacted David Colton after receiving the check nor has he contacted me since 12/17/2018. I will be reporting this scam to every agency and social media outlet possible in order to inform other job seekers of this well drawn out scam.
