A woman posted on a USC Housing Facebook page that she had a 1 BR apartment for lease near campus. If interested, message her with a screenshot of the post. She then provides apartment information, location (right next to campus, 1015 1/2 W 30th Street), and a very reasonable rent and security deposit. The apartment is small but appears well kept in the photos and video she provides via messenger. She then asks for an application including drivers license photos. She wouldn't arrange a walk through in person before the application or until the $300 "security deposit" was received via Paypal or Zelle, but rather stated that a "code" would be provided to tour with the current tenant as the purported female landlord lived out of state (Arkansas). We looked up the Los Angeles address and the property ownership didn't match, but the unit showed up as part of a large, managed complex (The Riviera). We contacted their management (Mosaic Properties), who confirmed the address provided was not a privately-owned unit, and that it was a scam. Luckily no money lost, but an unfortunate freeze on our son's credit accounts.
