This was the typical "Grandma" call. "Grandson" called. He had been to a friend's funeral in "Fairfield" MA (which the area code is 413) who had died of lung cancer, and he wanted to pay his respects to the family. He had been involved in a car wreck and had an injury to his nose and upper lip with stitches. The accident was not his fault and he has a witness that it was this lady's fault, but the police came and locked him up. He has a public defender and he has to post bond. Can he have the lawyer call me. "Sure", have him call Grandma. Lawyer calls from 508-623-7534 which is all the way across the state from Springfield but they are supposed to be together. Lawyer repeats everything that grandson said and he needs me to get a piece of paper and a pen to write down instructions. First of all he needs $8,000 to post bond for grandson. I am to go guy one large manila envelope and two letter size manila envelopes. Go to my bank and get the money as soon as possible. But I'm not to tell them it is for my grandson in jail. I am to tell them it is for a home improvement. Then I am to call him back at 508-623-7534. Okay? I tell him I can't get to the bank it is frozen over down here, ice everywhere. He says, you can't get to the bank for your grandson? I can't get him out until you do! I say, where is he going to stay and how will he eat until his court date? He says he can leave and come home. I ask if he was drinking when the accident happened. He says no. I ask if he was smoking marijuana when the accident happened, the lawyer says yes. He quickly goes on to insist I must get to the bank. I tell him the boy has to stay there until he gets clear in court. He says, there is a witness and he is going to get the charges cleared. The boy won't have to be in court. I tell him he is going to get the boy a record. He can't foretell what is going to happen in court. The boy knows what the family rules are. If he was drinking or smoking marijuana and got himself locked up, he got himself into it and he can get himself out! He said you mean you wont help your grandson??? I told him grandson knew the rules. He hung up and grandson calls back. He pleads with me. I tell him that the lawyer cannot guarantee that he can get the case dismissed even with his "witness". Grandson says the money is refundable and I will get back every dollar. I tell him that he needs to stay there and see this through. They will feed him good and he will be there for his court. He pleads, but Grandma, you are not going to help me??? I told him, look you knew what the family rule is, you are drinking or smoking marijuana and get yourself in trouble, then you get yourself out! He hung up on me!

First of all, I am in Texas. They must have someone in Tyler Texas or near who would come to meet me for the switch (which the lawyer never got to in his instructions, I was just supposed to get the cash first). The "boy" is supposed to be in Springfield and his lawyer is calling from all away across the state of Massachusetts. AND, I knew from the beginning it was not my grandson because none of my grandchildren call me Grandma. Next, non of them speak with a Yankee accent! If they are going to scam this old 75 year old grandmother, they best learn to speak Texan and they best learn that not all Texas grandmothers are called "Grandma!" Next of all, they need to know that because of Covid we "Grandmas" are bored stiff with having to stay quarantined to stay safe for a year now and are tickled pink to get any king of robo call, or scam call. We love venting and running them around the bush, frustrating them with having to repeat themselves because we are "hard of hearing" and misunderstanding everything they say until they hang up! MAKE MY DAY!
