His next email read, “Hello and thanks for your email. So far I like what I saw on photos,and would like to know more about that bike. Have some history report for it?
Sincerely,”
It should have been a red flag to me that he ignored my question, and didn’t sign his name. I replied with my own brief history of when and where I bought the bike, along with noting a couple minor repairs. His reply to that was as follows:
“This bike definitely drew my attention, however I would need to find out more about its history and background before taking further steps. That is why I would appreciate if you can get official history report about it. In case you don’t have preferred service, can you use vinschecks.com please? I had very positive experience with it in the past, but being twice as cheap as Carfax can also be advantage in this case. Regards,”
...again, he didn’t sign his name. The choppy grammar should have been another red flag, plus the use of the word “regards”. But I went ahead and clicked the link in the email, and entered the motorcycle’s VIN. There was a link to buy the full report; before clicking on that, I decided to look up the website to see if anyone had reported it. I didn’t find anything specific about vinscheck.com, but I did find articles on BBB’s website about scams using fake VIN check sites. Finally, all the red flags about this “buyer” became obvious.
I thought about responding one last time to this guy to call him out, but then decided I’d just report him to Craigslist and report him here. I doubt his real identity will be found, as people can hide behind the anonymous emails that Craigslist provides.
