I was contacted through e-mail by [email protected]. I have attached the initial e-mail. They told me to conduct my interview through Google Hangouts. I had never done this before. The whole interview was through chat, never a video call, even though I requested one. They offered me the position and claimed to send me a check of $2,000 for equipment. The next day, they told me to be onliine at 8am so they could get me the tracking number. She never gave it to me. I started to feel fishy about all of it, so I put my guard up. I asked about what equipment they would be sending. I have been unemployed for over a month, and was just wanting to start as soon as possible. They claimed to be sending a Stealth Macbook pro and other equipment. I said instead of waiting for the check, I could possibly pay for some of it now (this was before I knew the check amount) and they could reimburse me when the check came. They told me the amount of the check, and I was not able to pay that much up front. She said that was fine and the vendor would be getting my laptop prepared today (8/18) and it would arrive Monday (8/20). After this, she said for them to be able to get my laptop sent off I would need to go buy $500 of itunes gift cards (in $50 or $100 denominations). Immediately, I knew something was up. She wanted me to buy them today (she wouldn't wait another day), and she wanted me to send her pictures of the 16-digit codes on the back of each card so she could "commence the installation of my software and so the vendor can send my laptop out to be delivered by Monday". I said I did not feel comfortable doing this, and I still had no tracking number. She eventually gave me a tracking number, after asking multiple times. The tracking number did not work. I told her this, and she said that "FedEx had some issues with the tracking numbers and they will give the new one to me as soon as it is available. You have nothing to worry about." After this, I asked for a phone number to verify my position in the company. She gave me a 424 number. I called it, and a man with a heavy accent answered. He was able to identify my by my address, which was promising, but I still didn't want to let my guards down. She said I needed to get the cards within the next hour so the vendor could send my equipment out. I lied and told her I would go get them. I also asked if she could get me her supervisor's name and number and she ignored me for 40 minutes (after rapidly responding for about 3 hours). I knew this would make her finally reply, so i said "i got the cards." She immediately responded. She wanted me to send the receipts. At this point, I knew I was being scammed after reading online about being cautious to Google Hangout interviews. I said "I do not want this position". With a credited business, she should have had a company e-mail. Her e-mail was a personal g-mail e-mail. Also, she should have been more attentive after I announced my leaving, because there was supposedly money on the way to me. She quickly responded "Ok bye". I know no money was lost here, but this woman and her affiliates are scamming people for their money and disguising as an accredited business.
