A member organization received an email with an invoice attached that was requesting a $25,860 annual membership fee for their dues to the Colorado Nonprofit Association. The original email was sent from the Administrative Assistant's correct email address with the request to pay the attached invoice to the Wells Fargo information included on the slip, but there were no attachments. The Bookkeeper responded saying that they needed the attachment, and the person operating under the Admin Assistant's email sent the invoice as an attachment and asked for the payment to be processed immediately. Even though the email address and signature looked correct, none of these emails were actually sent by the Admin Assistant. The Invoice had all of the correct contact information, website, and logos for the Colorado Nonprofit Association but the banking information was to a Wells Fargo account that the company is not associated with.
