I was reached out to through text message. I had been applying through LinkedIn. Found it weird that they texted, asked me to use WhatsApp (encrypted messaging). I received a ton of messages through WhatsApp. I played along to see what’s going on. They had me send a pic of my ID/photo of myself (i used an old photo/not a selfie) but it was obviously so they could use my ID somewhere & use my picture to confirm it is me. They asked me to sign an offer of employment document which I now see they could easily crop the document to use my signature. They said they’d send me a check for “start up materials”. Originally said they’d mail the check through fedex but then sent the check through onlinecheckwriter.com to “speed up the process”. I knew it was fake bc the check said “Humana” on it & then PNC Bank Pittsburgh with no real address. It was also a check for $3150.. weird. When I asked what I would be asked to purchase he said “let’s take it one step at a time & wait for the check to clear so there are no errors”. $400 had cleared in my bank so he was trying to get me to purchase items for the job through a “vendor” another red flag. I said I won’t be purchasing anything if the check doesn’t clear. He said alright & would check with me in 24hrs. I told him when he reached back out that the check was fraudulent & he stopped replying. Glad I didn’t touch that money because it wasnt real.

Interview over WhatsApp (text app) first red flag

No call - only emails from a strange address covered as APPIAN INC but when clicking on the address it said “[email protected]” - red flag

Sending money for “startup” - red flag

Asking me to send a picture of my ID/picture of myself - red flag

Asking for my signature - red flag

So many red flags, too many to type. I have screenshots of every conversation/emails also. Screenshots of the check sent, the physical check is printed out. These scammers are smart but google is your friend, and so is your intuition.
