My father-in-law fell for this scam. A popup on a website directed him to the scammer. They called and the scammer said they had detected that someone had gained access to his computer and they could help install malware detection software. He said he should ask his kids about this (he's elderly) but they pushed very hard with scare tactics to convince him not to do this. So they had him install software to give them remote access to his computer. They required payment of $499.99 and had him scan and email the front and back of his written check for payment. When I heard about it I disconnected his computer from the internet and changed all his account passwords. I called the company and requested a refund. They said they would do this. After a few weeks and several more calls, they called me to give my "refund" which was just another scammer requiring me to install remote access software and login to my bank account (so they could see the credentials) in order to process the refund. I refused to do this so they hung up.
