- Land O Lakes, FL, USA

On August 15 I applied for a job with a local company and got an interview set up for the next day, August 16.

A little history: I had been laid off from my position as a Graphic Designer 2-1/2 years ago, and have been trying to find a permanent job in a related field. It has been frustrating and then I saw the remote Graphic Design job on Indeed.

Here is the email I got after applying for the job:

Recruitment Office,

Cigar City Magazine

Tampa, FL.

It took 2 hours of question and answer (I wonder how many other victims he was interviewing at the same time.) At the end of the chat, my answers were taken to the Board and I was hired. I sent back my acceptance letter and was looking forward to the future.

He said that he wanted to set up my home office with new equipment: Mac, scanner, tablet, etc. The next day we received a check for $4867.23, and he said I needed to deposit into the ATM. This was Saturday, so funds would not be released until Tuesday. Well, on Tuesday he told me that they had their own vendors for the equipment and they needed to be paid by cashiers check, money order or cash...cash was the best. So, I got the funds and deposited them into the vendor account at another bank....etc...

By Wednesday, the check had been dishonored and my account was overdrawn. I reached out to "my boss" who said he would check, and that he spoke to the bank and it was posting mistake. No equipment showed up at my door that day, or the next. I think it was Thursday that I finally realized that I had been scammed. I went to my bank and the representative reported the fraud. The next day I called the Pasco Sheriff's Department and filed an incident report. They said they really didn't work internet crimes and he gave me the ic3.gov website to file a complaint. I sent the emails with the headers and have a boat load of documentation if it is ever needed.

Also on Friday, August 23, my bank manager (Wells Fargo) and I conference-called Bank of America where the money had been deposited and asked if that account had been/could be flagged. The representative we spoke to said that they can't access that account without the presence of the account holder...and there was no "pre-emptive strike" (his words) they could take. He said that the banks' fraud departments should work together on this.

So we play the waiting game. My husband saw the interviewer's name on linked-in - Izzy Hernandez, but as the deputy said (I called again this week), it could be an international group, or anyone who can copy a logo and sign on with an email account...why would they leave info that would lead to an arrest? I also didn't want to get in the way of any investigation the FBI would be doing. As I understand the folks at the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center look at the complaint/materials and then send that info to the local and state authorities. And, if the company's identity had been hacked, I didn't want to be accused of defamation.
