Do not allow your teenager to apply for a job at Chippies Place. They call teenagers in to do "working interviews". They tell them that they only get paid "if" they get the job. They do not tell them that if they do NOT get the job, that they will NOT be paid. This is illegal! My daughter had this happen personally just a few weeks ago. I tried to rectify it locally first with two different owners. Both explained that they had been doing this for over a year and never had a problem. The fact is, anything defined as a working interview, where a person is doing someone's job that is benefiting the company, they are to be compensated. I had no choice but to turn them into the Federal Wage and Hour Division. They finally, and very reluctantly, issued payment for only 8 of the 11 hours and for only minimum wage. Since no time cards are kept, and they did not have her fill out any kind of paperwork, she unfortunately is out any other hours and money. I just want the public to know that these owners completely disagreed that they are breaking the law. I also want the public to know that if your teenager has been a victim to the "working interview" at this company and was not compensated, that you need to reach out to the Federal Wage and Hour Division. We do not need a company in our community that does operate within the law and does not have ethical practices. They are basically getting free labor from teenagers that think they stand a chance at getting a job, only to be let down and not paid. I COMPLETELY understand the "purpose" of working interviews and why they need to do them. However; the company needs to abide by the law and compensate for them.
