I was contacted via email by an alleged Brenda Hernandez from the Children's Law Center of California. She "connected" me to an alleged Lindsay Garmon from Power Digital Marketing's San Diego office for a Transcriber/Transcriptionist job. Communications were done via email or Teams chat, and the interview was conducted via Teams Chat as well. I had checked both websites in their respective signature blocks, and both went to legitimate websites. I also checked for a LinkedIn profile for Lindsay and found one that had been recently active and had a post of what I believed to be her children. The post had replies on it and a Google Image Search of the photo didn't produce a match, so I believed the post to be legitimate. I began the initial onboarding process, but when I received the contract, I noted grammatical errors that didn't make sense for how often the document should have been reviewed by someone. They then asked if I would deposit a check from their client to cover my purchase of office equipment. I was concerned at this point, as no job had ever asked that of me before. At this point, I contacted the DC/VA office of Power to discreetly request additional confirmation. They quickly assured me that a scam was in progress and asked for my notes of the conversations. I provided them so they could proceed accordingly.
