Type of a scam Bank/Credit Card Company Imposter
When I looked the number up on the Internet, it seemed to be attached to the Chase website (specifically their mortgage department). My iPhone also identify this as an identify this as a Chase Bank number. Interestingly, when I called the real Chase Bank, (number on the back of my card) they said (800) 848-9380 is not actually associated with them and is not on their official list of numbers. Furthermore, Chase confirmed that they would never call a customer and ask for their account information.
Chase’s fraud department guessed that perhaps this was an AI website/scam that makes it seem like the scammers are with Chase bank. While, I did not give them information directly, I did call the number back and it seemed to indeed be a Chase number. I did initially type the last four digits of my SS number on the phone when I called back the number (since I thought it was Chase Bank’s mortgage department number) but then I hung up the phone because I did not want to risk giving any more information
I felt at my duty as a citizen to report this. I also called Chase, and I was told they were going to look into it, but they didn’t seem interested last week when it happened to my mother, and I am worried that a lot of people will be tricked because everything on the Internet suggests it is a legitimate Chase number. From what I found in online threads, this has happened to a number of people. I hope this can be results soon, so that more people aren’t tricked into giving away their bank account information to these frauds who are pretending to be Chase Bank.
