CEO's name Reports & Reviews (1)

- Laurel, MD, USA

I received an email from someone I thought was the CEO of the company I started working remotely for 2 weeks ago. He asked for my cell phone number so he could give me an assignment. I replied with my cell number and he texted that he was in a client meeting and couldn’t talk but urgently needed me to go to a store to buy Apple Gift Cards for the client he was meeting with. He said he needed them in 15 minutes or less because the client was waiting, and I would be reimbursed by the company after his meeting. He said to text him pictures of the gift cards and asked me to wait in the store so the clients could verify them. I did this and he asked for more cards, then even more cards.

At this point, I contacted my immediate supervisor at the company who checked with others at the company and told me this was not the CEO. It was a scam. My immediate supervisor said this scam had happened at the company a few years ago and new employee(s) were targeted. I then checked the original email from who I thought was the CEO. After expanding the address header, I realized it was a fraudulent address and sent at 12:35 am – both signs it was a scam that I missed.
