I was reached out to via text message. They said they had reviewed my resume on linked in and wanted to have an interview over the Telegram app. They have a ton of details regarding the role and asked a lot of normal interview questions. They then reached out via the official email that is listed on the company’s website for contact and impersonated what seem to be real people working for the company. We corresponded for a week or so and sent in background paperwork. They offered me the position. Seemed legitimate until they emailed me a “startup check” to pay for software. It was a digital “cashier’s check” from PNC bank. This was a red flag for me so I called PNC to confirm. They said that cashier’s checks can never be over email and that it is a popular scam right now. I reached out to them to tell them this and, surprise, they stopped responding. I didn’t deposit the check, but did send them a picture of my driver’s license for a “background check.” I was told by the bank to file a police report. I also went back into the emails and am seeing that they sent emails from the official email, but had it set up to have the replies go to a separate email ([email protected]).
