We were selling a couch on an online marketplace. We were contacted by a James of C&E Distribution LLC, he told us he was moving to Denver and could use a little help. He gave us a check for $1,200 from C&E Distribution LLC. $200 for the couch and $1,000 for the movers who would take the couch. We cashed the check, it completely cleared, the money was in my wife's account, we looked up C&E Distribution LLC it was a legitimate business, nothing about fraud or scams or anything, we looked up the bank on the check, Home Bank, nothing about fraud or scams or anything. James then asked us to venmo the $1,000 to an Iashah-Carter who was the movers agent. We did so from my wife's account, just about right after my wife's bank, Wells Fargo, pulled the $1,200 from her account. We then asked Wells Fargo to stop the venmo transaction which they did. Venmo demanded $1,000 from us even though we explained the whole situation to them and told them that Iashah-Carter's account is a part of a fraud scheme, Venmo did not investigate or do anything about Iashah-Carter's account. Venmo then took $13 (the amount in my wife's account) from her account and refused to give it back. We have not heard from James since. Our issues with Venmo have now been resolved, however it took reporting this scam to the FBI, FTC, and New York Attorney General to get anyone at Venmo to listen to us. Iashah-Carter's account is probably still active and we are still deeply concerned that Venmo is a haven for this type of fraud.
