Yesterday my husband and I both received calls from a toll free number that neither of us recognized. I let the call go to voice mail as I have been getting many automated calls asking for donations to political parties. My husband let the call go to his voice mail as well because he was at work. About an hour later I received a call from one of my co-workers and she stated that a woman named Holly Thompson had called my place of employment asking for me because there is a pending criminal charge against me in Mecklenburg county which is about two and a half hours away from where we live and I have never lived in Mecklenburg county. I was horrified, of course, so my husband immediately called the number for Holly Thompson back to find out what was going on. Once in touch with Miss Thompson, she told my husband that she was a mediator on retainer just for the day and that he had taken a payday loan out from a company called Cash Net in 2012. He of course, was very confused because he had not taken any such loan out. We also did not even know each other in 2012 so the fact that my name and my place of employment was so aggressively sought out seemed very strange. Holly Thompson then told my husband that everything could be resolved and we could avoid going to court if he paid just a lump sum. She would not tell him how much the loan was taken out for or how much the lump sum was going to be if he decided to pay that. He then told her that he needed to talk to me about this and he would call her back. I told him I thought this was a scam and not to call her back. Later that evening we received a call from my brother-in-law who had received the same voice mail saying that he was needed as a character witness in a pending case against my husband and I. She also told my brother-in-law that a criminal background check had shown that neither of us had ever had criminal charges brought against us in the past. This is true, however; I did not think that any details of any case or background check could be disclosed. They have not attempted to contact us again after all of this.
