I booked a rental car near LAX almost a month in advance on a web site I have used multiple times before. As is often the case, I was not required to prepay for the reservation which could be cancelled for free. I arrived via the Westin Hotel shuttle as instructed, and at the reservation time only to be told that the car size I had reserved was no longer available. Only an SUV was available, and I could upgrade for $45 a day. I was then told I had no other option because I did not prepay for the car, and my total would be $187 rather than the $81 total for my online reservation, or they could simply cancel my reservation. When I refused their up-sell, I overheard them offering the man behind me that he could pay extra or wait for 45 min to a couple of hours to see if his reserved size of car became available. When I stepped back to the counter to ask why I hadn’t been offered a chance to wait for a car, I was told it was because I did not prepay. In addition, someone ahead of me was turned away because she had a reservation only to find at the counter that they only accepted credit not debit cards unless she paid an additional fee. She, like me, walked away without a car - both of us stranded after flying into LAX - because of NU Car’s unethical behavior. In short, they are selling inventory they do not have, enticing renters with low sticker prices, and then up-selling folks who find themselves otherwise stranded because NU Car is not honoring their reservations.
