The current scam that we are seeing the most is a multi-step communication that is generally intended to result in a criminal stealing money by getting someone to purchase gift cards and send them the information necessary to use the cards. The first step has the scammer sending an email message, usually claiming to be the University president, a vice president, your supervisor, a friend or family member to the targeted individual. The message will indicate that the person the scammer is pretending to be is busy - possibly in a meeting or traveling - and they are wondering if you are around and can text them back. For those that respond to the initial message, the scammer will request that you go out and purchase gift cards for some purpose, and they will reimburse you when they are done. Once you have confirmed that you have purchased the cards, the scammer will ask you send a picture of the gift card codes or to text them that information. Once the information has been sent, the gift card will immediately be used, and the purchaser will be out of the amount of money they provided with almost no options to recoup their loss.
