I had to be getting PUNK'D there was no way this was real!

I rented a vehicle through an app called Turo (like AirBNB but for vehicles).

My reservation was for 3 days over Thanksgiving, Nov 23rd-25th 2022. When I made the reservation I requested a pickup time for noon. The car owner, Arlando, approved it but then 3 hours before pickup time he said the vehicle would be ready at 1pm. So I modified the reservation to reflect that, those changes had to also be approved by the owner. He ignored me when I told him to approve the changes until I finally called him, and a woman answered and she approved it for me.

Arlando had multiple cars up for rent under his profile with all good reviews, so I gave him the benefit of the doubt.

I arrived at the pickup location at 12:50 and call him to let him know I am there. He tells me he will be there "closer to 1" even though it was 10 minutes till? But okayyyyy.

He texted me at 12:10 saying he will be there in 5, he had to gas up the car. Finally shows up at 12:30, the gas in the car wasn't even full.

I drove off and 10 minutes later the check engine light comes. The more I drive it the more the transmission starts slipping. I texted the owner and he states that he has not had any issues with it and wasn't aware. I told him I was okay with continuing to drive it if he wanted me to, and if it breaks down we will figure it out then.

Well it broke down an hour before I had to return it on Friday. The transmission overheated and I informed the owner. He told me to leave it where I was at (Boot barn parking lot) and leave the keys in the center console and leave it unlocked. Arlando begged me not to leave a negative review... So I left the car as requested and got an uber back to the Army base.

I informed Turo about the issues with the vehicle and they gave me a refund.

Then on Sunday I get 3 back to back phone calls from this guy. He can't find the vehicle. (Well you waited two days to pick up the car?)

Arlando tries to accuse me of stealing the vehicle and tells turo I never returned the vehicle. I show all the proof to turo, screenshots of the conversations, pictures of the check engine light, receipt of my uber trip, etc.

I call the police department that following Monday to see if the car was reported stolen, there was no report. I followed up at the end of the week, still no report of the vehicle being stolen.

Weird?

I had called Turo dozens of times asking to speak to a supervisor. They would tell me a supervisor will contact me within 48 hours, I was never contacted!

2 weeks later I get an email from Turo saying I owe $600 for all these fees and the vehicle owner posted pictures of the car completely trashed and blaming me for it.

DO NOT RENT FROM TURO.

The customer service is horrific, you can't get anyone to call you back (if you ever get ahold of anyone to begin with). They have all the proof and I was told multiple times it will not affect me and I am not accountable for this. Then get an email saying my card was declined for $600.

This case is still open but I am baffled at how ignorant this situation is.

Please save your time, money, and sanity by renting through an actual rental car company.

And avoid a man named Arlando
