Big O Tires at 300 West 900 South in Salt Lake City.
Went in for an alignment. They had my car for a couple hours, and said they couldn’t give it an alignment, because a bunch of parts needed replacing, and they wouldn’t be able to align it without replacing those parts.
The alignment cost $160, all the parts that they advised that needed replacing amounted to about $2500.
I said that I’d prefer to wait to have any of those parts replaced, and they refused. They actually refused to release my car to me, after paying the $160 for the alignment that they didn’t do, unless I paid them the $2500 right then and there for those extra parts. At that point, I insisted, and eventually prevailed.
Turns out they were lying about all of it. All of the parts that they said were ruined were actually in perfect working condition.
It might be unethical to lie to your customers like this, but that doesn’t break any laws. But, where this borders on fraud, is that they willingly and knowingly didn’t perform the alignment that they charged me for, even though they could have.
I don’t have any video or audio recordings of my encounters with them. I’m a journalist, I know the wiretapping / recording laws. I do have all the paperwork (receipts) and some pictures.
