Yes, I have received a number of calls from this entity as well. I happened to be in the third party recovery business years ago. all consumers need to know the FDCPA, Fair Debt Collections Practices Act. First a letter of a debt has been placed for collections with a third party concern and to give a debtor a 30 day response. Simple, your personal information has been leaked to third party sites and the disclaimer on such sites are in fine print. Everyone need to file a affidavit of identity Theft with the federal government. one thing not to do, volunteer any information and never send money period.

Someone from Capital Portfolio Group called my brother, father and step mother and told them that I was in serious trouble with a debt. I only received an automated voicemail. Given that I only have two debts, my car and student loans, both of which are in good standing, I knew this had to be a scam. I went to the website, CaptialPortfolioGroup.com, and sent a cease and desist letter through their contact form. Their website had no physical address, the DNS records show that the website had only existed for 60 days, and no company by that name could be found with any Secretary of State office in the United States.

My phone did not ring, but I suddenly had a voicemail, it's was a low quality recording of a man telling me he's from Capital Portfolio Group and I owe money. They are giving me the option to pay up before collections goes any further. Then he states you can find out what you owe and how to pay on a website, this websites asks "what phone number did we call you at?" as if that was a normal way to identify a person about a financial issue.. I did not go any further than that screen. I smelled scam before I even listened to the voicemail but I was curious. So I did some research the website is brand spanking new, and the company is not a company. However it's sounds official since a whole lot of financial companies use the words "Capital" "Portfolio" and "group". I personally have three accounts that use those words in their names. The key is none of them use those words together in that order.
