I really had recently made a fraud claim with Capital One, but I thought it was resolved (in my favor). Even so, foolishly, I called the number back and had to leave a message. His answering message requested that I leave my name and either my credit card number, the case number, or my social security number and details of what the call was about and a good phone number to reach me and a good time to reach me. Foolishly I left my credit card number (he already correctly had my name and phone number)!
Today I realized how foolish I had been and so called Capital One and asked if they really had called. They determined that this was a suspicious call and that it had not come from them in reality, so I cancelled that old card. Fortunately no charges had been made on it yet. Capital One requested that I make a report to the local police as well.
