The scammer, who went by the name of Alex Haas, reached out to me with a job. I am looking for work and I posted my resume on LinkedIn, Indeed, and other job sites, so I believed he saw my resume and thought I would be a good fit. The email address he used looked legitimate, as is the company that he claimed to work for. They are a cafe/restaurant with multiple locations in the area. He scheduled a phone interview with me, where he asked legitimate interview questions, such as previous experience in the field and my capabilities. This morning I woke up to a check for $2,475.22 (sent via FedEx today) and four missed calls from him (at a separate number than the one he had called to interview me from). He said the check was initial payment and money for office supplies. He kept urging me to cash it, and kept saying I should tell him as soon as I completed the transaction. This made me suspicious, as I hadn’t even met him in person or filled out an application yet. I called the bank listed on the check and they confirmed that it was a fraudulent check. I blocked his email address and the phone he called me from. He then sent me a text from the first number, threatening to call the police on me.
