I think this scam picks on a retirement community in Arizona just NW of Peoria, because today was the third time I've been contacted by this particular scam with this particular Eastern Europe accent. The first time was at work at a podiatrist office in my neighborhood (who has since retired) claiming that the computer was under attack. Naturally, I worried about our patient's files and barely hesitated to follow the directions. My co-worker thought I was dealing with an insurance company, but when she saw me stop because they asked for remote access to the computer, she asked what was going on. I stopped because I was told when we switched to the office's new internet provider that they would never call requesting remote access, only if we called them. I quickly closed everything out and claimed I had to leave because of an emergency and ignored all calls from them since at the office. My co-worker told me her father actually worked for Windows Support and said that they wouldn't call for remote access either, and it was a good thing I stopped when I did. The second time was at home, where I was already feeling deja vu over the same wording and accents, and finally said that I didn't have time and to not call again and hung up. Today was the THIRD time they've called me, so I'm submitting the scam report. Catching on to the con, when they asked if I had a computer, I made affirming noises and lied about the type I have, which he quickly agreed and said the computer IP address was under attack and that could mean a hacker or a virus and he needed access to the computer remotely to fix it. I then told them I barely knew how to turn the computer on, when he assured me that even without the password just turning the computer on would allow him access. That's what scared me into making this report. I claimed only my spouse had the password and such and hung up on the caller. Money hadn't even come up in any of the scams, but I'm sure once they had remote access that would have changed. I'm not sure if the name that flashed on the caller ID isn't just an innocent go-between, but both times I was contacted at home, it was under this name and phone number. I would suggest for any others out there to contact their Internet Provider and make sure that they would never call for remote access, only asking for it if you call them, because until that red light came up the first time, a lot of people could have suffered and I would have blindly followed the instructions and payout.
