I received a phone call from an unknown number this morning (1-6-17) on my cell phone, which I was unable to answer. Then they called my house phone and spoke with my Grandmother. They informed her that I should have received a subpoena for case # 00-188773WA and I needed to contact them at 888-285-7254 immediately, as this is time sensitive. I called them and when they answered they asked for my case number so that I can be transferred to the person handling my case, and I gave it to them. I was then connected to a man (I cannot remember his name) who told me that his company had been retained 60 days ago by a hospital group (again, cannot remember the name of the parent company for the hospitals) in regards to a debt of $250.70. He asked if I knew what the group was, and I told him I didn't. He told me it was a chain of hospitals that go by "Good Samaritan Hospital". I recognized that hospital from a minor accident I had in 2006. I explained to him that this debt was paid 10 years ago when the bill came. He said that couldn't be the case as they had been retained by the hospital to collect the debt. He explained to me that I had a few options- I could pay the balance of $250.70 (some sort of a settlement instead of paying the some $800 occurred over the years), I could do nothing and the balance would not only go back up to the $800+, but also add $2,500, or I could take it to court to try and fight it, which would cost me roughly $500-$700. He asked me if I had received the correspondence from them and I told him I hadn't, he asked to clarify my address, he told me my address, and instead of confirming, I just told him I had not received anything from them. He said he would mark that on my case that I hadn't received anything and asked me what I would like to do to take care of this situation. He was very kind, knowledgeable, and understanding of my frustrations. I told him I didn't want to do anything until I contacted the hospital. He told me I could call them, but as they have already turned my account over to legal services, they were not allowed to discuss anything from my account with me, they might, but they aren't allowed to. He gave me an account number to reference when I called. I called the hospital and they confirmed that, not only had my bill been payed 10 years ago, but the statute of limitations in Washington State says that you cannot go after someone for a debt beyond 7 years. I called the "mediation" firm back and he told me that what they said cannot be true because they had been retained 60 days ago to collect this debt. I explained to him the conversation and he told me he would be contacting the hospital and call me back. I, then, contacted the hospital again and spoke to a different individual to make sure that I was given the right information. She also looked up the case number for me and told me it didn't exist in her county, but that I needed to make sure with my county and gave me the superior court's phone number. She then took all of the information I was provided by the "mediation firm" and forwarded everything on to her financial team to take care of on my behalf. I called my county's superior court and also told her the story of what had happened. She looked for that case number and also looked up my name in superior court and district court and found absolutely nothing. She also requested all of the information he provided me with and said she was going to call them and call me back. She did. She called me back to tell me that she informed them who she was and where she worked- she let them know she was fully aware of this scam and told them she was going to be turning this over to the authorities and if they try to contact me again, I would be getting my attorney.
