Apple computer suddenly froze with a message on the screen and a number to call claiming it was Apple. It was not Apple! My college daughter didn't know that... panicked and called the number. After she tearfully explained that her computer was totally frozen with a virus and she didn't want to lose any of her data, the person made it sound like she was from Apple and would transfer her to a third party who Apple uses for tech support. After being transferred, the person said my daughter had a virus but he thought he could remote in and fix it for $279. Included in the $279 would be 3 years of network security/technical support. She desperately needed her computer and allowed the person to remotely access it. He was very convincing. The next thing they were asking for her banking information. She refused to give it. They asked again and she said her parents were paying and she didn't have that information. After it was over they sent her 2 emails. One with an invoice and the other with bank info to submit payment. I am not paying. I believe this is a total scam. When I started researching, I found many others with similar stories of people who feel they were scammed by this company through identical stories. I believe this company hijacked her computer and put the message on the screen. I believe they did that to scam her out of $279 making her believe they were resolving her issue. I also believe they were trying to get her banking information. So glad she did not give it but still worried that they had remote access to her computer. Wondering if they put something on it that will allow them to steal a credit card if it is used on the computer. Or hijack her webcam. I little unnerving.
