I received an email interest from Linda Van about needing bookkeeping service. I have a startup bookkeeping/accounting business. In the email she stated that she needed me for check cutting services for about 200 checks/month. I told her that I need for her to sign a services agreement first before I could begin. She signed the agree and then began to have me order supplies to cut the checks. She told me to invoice her $2000 for the supplies (which I thought was kind of high for checks stock and envelopes) through QBO and she would pay it. I sent the invoice from my QuickBooks account and it seemed to be paid with a pending status. Then she immediately requested that I go to Walmart and get a $100 Vanilla Visa Gift Card. I told her that the money had not cleared and I would be paying out of my personal funds. She said ok but get a $200 gift card scratch the barcode and send a picture of it to her front and back. I got the gift card but still was skeptical so I emailed her back and said that I don't feel comfortable doing this and I'd rather wait until the funds she paid me had cleared my bank. She said that the vendor needed payment today and that she would refund me back as soon as her payment to me cleared. I didn't give her the photos of the gift card but instead called the number that she gave me to find out that the number was from Colorado and when I asked for Linda Van, the person on the other end informed me that it was a wrong number. Once I realized that it was a scam, I immediately emailed the address back and met them know that I was on to them, to cancel the contract, and that I was reporting them to the authorities. I canceled the payment and invoice in QBO and reported them on my Gmail account.
