While searching for a rental house in Winston-Salem, NC, we inquired about a house we were interested in. A couple of days later, we received a text from the supposed owner saying that house was no longer available but one very similar and close by was. It was listed with a company, but he was the owner and he said we could just go through him. We set up a time to go look at it and since the "owner" Braxton Fletcher claimed to live in Emerald Isle, but he would fascilitate a remote entry by giving us the key code to the lock box once we arrived at the house. We did that. Looked around. Liked the house and sent in our rental application with all of the usual personal information. The next day he said we were approved and send us the rental agreement. We looked over the lease, which looked like every other lease I've ever signed and we sent it in a day or two later. After that he said he would send us the information to pay the deposit via a bitcoin ATM. We paid the deposit plus first months rent and he confirmed payment. He said for now we could just keep the key from the lockbox once we go back and make copies for ourselves. Due to recovering from COVID and feverishly packing to get out of where we were, my husband and I didn't go back to the house for a week or so. When we arrived, the key code no longer worked. I messaged "Braxton" and he reset the code and gave the new code to us. Only it didn't work. So we stood outside texting and calling for an hour trying to get in to this house. The next morning, my husband called the original rental company that had the information posted in the first place, only to find out that Braxton Fletcher was not the owner, they didn't know who that was, how he was able to access the key code, or if he was even a real person. I filed reports with the police as well as online forums for scamming victims and no one has helped us whatsoever. However, I'm hoping I can save someone else the trouble.
