I purchased tickets to a Tough Mudder event for myself and my girlfriend including the $10 refund protection fee for each of us. The refund protection is managed by Booking Protect. We purchased the refund protection as my girlfriend has arthritis which is manageable most of the time but due to occasional flare ups there was a chance she would not be able to participate in the physically challenging race. Sure enough this occurred leading up to the event and on the day of the race she felt too weak to participate as rigorous activity could also cause joint damage. I participated and afterwards I filed a refund claim for just her ticket within the required time period believing this would be pretty straight forward. The claims are processed by Booking Protect. They requested the original confirmation, unused ticket, and a doctor's note all of which was provided. My e-mail correspondences with them went conveniently unanswered unless I persisted and kept prompting both Tough Mudder and Booking Protect. I had to tell Tough Mudder to get through to Booking Protect as the latter did not respond. Eventually they said they would contact me to process my refund and at that point communication ceased. After more attempts contacting both companies Booking Protect excused the delayed replies to technical difficulties and said that they could not accept the doctor's note as they did not agree with the wording. This is absolutely ridiculous. A doctor's note is a doctor's note. A doctor would obviously not write off on a patient's condition and put their own credibility at risk unless the condition actually existed and caused an issue! We provided them with what was required and each time there was another issue or excuse. Eventually I just settled the issue with my credit card company, but Tough Mudder/Booking Protect walked away with the price of a ticket plus a "refund" fee for nothing and that should not go unnoticed or occur without repercussion or some sort of action, even if it is just awareness being brought to the public. It should be noted that the responsibility on this lies with both Tough Mudder and Booking Protect. I want to educate others considering to take part in the Tough Mudder event to beware of this fraudulent business conduct. Not only is it downright slimy but you are paying an additional fee just to have the option of a possible refund and the refund probably won't even happen with them making the process as difficult as possible. So you are basically just giving them free money for nothing.
