One day later, I received a picture of a document with the following instructions:

Dear Survey Agent, You will be evaluating Wal-Mart store services around your area.
You will receive CHECK, Amount $1,850 for the Reward/Survey via (FedEx Express) before 11:30 AM; once you received the CHECK make a deposit. Once fund is ready, proceed to Wal-Mart for the evaluation. Please note that $300 is compensation for your participation in this consumer evaluation.

That Thursday, I received the check, which was pretty convincing looking, and more messages. The check was from a legitimate bank in Texas, DATCU Credit Union, but the names being provided kept changing. The text message said Bill Warner, the instructions said Bill Turner, and the return address on the FedEx envelope said Bill Sender. The conversation is below:
SCAMMER: Survey instruction sent to your phone. Got it?
ME: Yes
SCAMMER: Read and Agree or Decline
ME: Why is the check in such a high amount?
ME: And why am I sending money to Kenya?
SCAMMER: Please re-read the instruction
ME: Is this a scam?
ME: I'm going to have to decline
ME: DECLINE
That was the end of the conversation. Now I'm reporting it.
