Type of a scam Employment
I work for Big Fish Games, Inc. ("Big Fish"), a video game company based in Seattle, Washington. We received a report from a person who was the victim of an employment scam. The scammers pretended to be Big Fish representatives offering an employment opportunity using fake email addresses and documents to obtain personal information and money. If people are contacted by Big Fish regarding an employment opportunity we ask that they be extra cautious, attempt to verify the identity of the person, and ensure that the email address used is actually from “bigfishgames.com” and not a slight misspelling as was the case here.
The victim was a student in a graduate program at a large university. The scammers contacted the victim, conducted a virtual interview, and required the victim to fill out fake background check and “appointment letter” forms. Eventually after informing the victim that he/she had been selected for the position at Big Fish, they asked the victim to submit payment for “equipment” related to the job.
There were two scammers involved (or at least they made it appear that way) that used fake aliases and claimed to be "Mike Cox, Recruiter at Big Fish Games" and “Patrick Mer, HR Manager at Big Fish Games" (who also listed a LinkedIn profile that is not publicly accessible: http://linkedin.com/in/patrick-mer-a020ba200). There are no such people at Big Fish.
To appear legitimate, the scammers used email addresses from a domain name, bigfishsgames.com, that is a slight misspelling of Big Fish's official website: [email protected] and [email protected]. The fake documents that they provided to the victim featured Big Fish branding copied from the internet.
