I found an ad for a work-from-home content manager for this company and applied. I don’t remember where I found it. Got an email regarding my application and gave them my phone number to conduct an “interview” for the job. I was told it was part-time and great for college students like myself. The pay was shown as $3,600 a month plus 7% commission for ad revenue. My tasks were to create social media accounts for the company. I worked on it a bit over a few weeks and was of course expecting pay at the end of the month. I received a check with the amount I was supposed to pay the advertising agency with plus my commission. I went to deposit it into my bank account and it was flagged as counterfeit. Of course this raises a huge red flag and I spoke to my “supervisor” about it. She seemed very perplexed and somewhat annoyed about the situation and came up with the excuse of their business account being frozen due to fraudulent charges on said account. Nevertheless, she sent another check and, once again, it got flagged. She started to get more annoyed although there was nothing I could do about it. I later found out that in order to pay the “advertising agency” I would need to send a wire transfer and I immediately was like, “okay, no. Something’s really not right.” So I explained to her in an email that my bank had suspicions of this whole thing being a scam. I also asked if I was even going to receive money for the work I had done given that two of their checks were bad. I never heard back from them again. In the beginning I had doubts because it seemed too good to be true, but I did sign a contract, of course now null and void, that I showed to family members that said looked legit. Be careful out there. It took me weeks to realize this was not real and was out of a job and money needed for bills…
